The museum’s exhibitions and galleries are the focus of a visit. The R. Harder Gallery of Gems and Minerals is located inside the headquarters of Jewelers Mutual Group, about twenty minutes north of the museum, and admission there is free.

Allow an hour or more if you plan to see the Chicago Collects: Jewelry in Perspective exhibition; the museum says most visitors spend at least that long exploring it. The museum welcomes photography in the galleries without flash. Service animals are allowed, while large bags and backpacks cannot be taken into the galleries. Food and drinks are not sold onsite, and food and beverages are not permitted in exhibit spaces.
